Hurricane Preparation: Brace Yourselves!

Hurricane season is here and it is time to prepare! According to LSU AgCenter, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is predicting 6 to 10 hurricanes and 3 to 6 major hurricanes. First off, if you are advised to evacuate, we highly recommend you follow those orders for your safety. If you plan to stay home, below is a checklist to help you prepare your home in the event of a hurricane. 

  1. Food & Water Per Person (to last at least 3 Days)
    1. Have non-perishable foods, bleach to sanitize utensils, can openers, a food thermometer
    2. Keep refrigerator and freezer door shut as much as possible
  2. Supply of Pet Food
    1. Have extra food and water for pets
  3. Cleaning Supplies
    1. Sanitizer, disinfecting wipes, soap
  4. Prescription Medications
  5. Emergency Power Sources
    1. Flashlights, Multiple batteries, Portable chargers
  6. Keep Important Documents Safe
    1. Insurance policies, medical documents, identification, passports, wills, bank account records
  7. Fire Extinguisher
  8. Cash on Hand
  9. Full Tank of Gas for Cars
  1. Verify Insurance Coverage
    1. Check homeowners policy and flood insurance
  2. Window Shutters, Garage Door Braces, Anchor Fuel Tanks
    1. Make sure your shutters and protection are hurricane-proof
  3. Lock/Bolt Doors and Windows
  4. Protect Outdoor Furniture 
    1. Bring inside your home or into the garage
  5. Clean gutters
    1. Prevents roof damage and flooding inside your home
  6. Trim Trees
    1. Trim any trees or branches touching your house. 
  7. Check For Leakage
    1. Keep track of doors, windows, ceilings, and walls
